Hiking Lake Tahoe :: Echo Lakes

This weekend we were busy working on the house, watching football and enjoying the last warm days of summer. We didn't hike this weekend but I'm sharing an oldie but goodie, Echo Lakes. This hike can be as long or short as you want to make it. It's probably one of my favorite late summer hikes. Plus it's a great one to take family and friends visiting as it's super easy, only 6 miles round-trip and 380 ft. in elevation gain (from 7,420 - 7,800ft). If you're leaving from South Lake make sure to pick up a sandwich at Lira's market in Meyers!

Tips:
The water taxi runs from
Memorial Day to Labor Day (if you don't want to hike the entire trail)
Late summer is the best time for a quick dip in one of the lakes.
Wilderness permits for both day and overnight hikes are required, both of which are available at the trial-head.

Alternates:
Shorten your hike to 2.5 miles by just utilizing the return route from the Upper Echo Lake boat dock.
Lengthen your route with a trip to the Lake of the Woods, Tamarack Lake, Ralston Lake or beyond.

Getting there:
Begin your hike at Echo Chalet, a summer only resort located just off US Hwy 50, ten miles westward of South Lake Tahoe and 49 miles east of Placerville.
