Friday's Fancies + SOREL Whistler Film Festival Contest

Happy Friday lovelies!

This week  Friday's Fancies is all about dressing ourselves. Well I have a treat for you. Thursday I entered this little ensemble in the SOREL Whistler Film Festival Polyvore Challenge (via Facebook) and was picked as one of 14 winners! So what does that mean? This girl won herself a pair of new SOREL boots! The contest is still underway, so don't delay enter here.

The outfit also represents me to a T!

Skinnies + sweater + puffy vest + boots = love
Who doesn't love a great watch by Marc Jacobs too!

I need your help. I'm not sure what boots to pick! I have an idea, but would love to hear what pair  you would choose. Here are my seven options:

Firmoo Glasses Review

Last month when Firmoo.com asked if I would be interested in reviewing a pair of prescription glasses I jumped at the chance.  It's always nice to have an extra pair of glasses around. Last week you might have even noticed this photo on instagram (@Tiara_Wasner):

Review:

The process was extremely easy.  First, I contacted my optometrist for my prescription and PD (pupillary distance). Then I browsed firmoo's website for frames recommended for a PD of 56. After narrowing it down to a few frames, I uploaded a photo of myself to gage what each frame might look like on.

1 // 2 // 3

I ended up picking option two. Within 10 days my new glasses arrived. Of course I ripped open the package and tried them on immediately. I love the way they look!  For those who don’t know I’ve been rocking a look like this since college. However, I typically do not purchase black frames. I’ve had frames in tortoise, burgundy and currently olive. Since these were free I thought why not venture out of my color comfort zone.  I’ve also owned glasses from BCBG, Juicy and currently Oakley. The quality of the glasses are much better than I expected. They even arrived with a case, soft bag, cleaning cloth and mini tool! So what are my overall thoughts?

Pros:
  • First pair free  program (All new customers receive their first pair free -- just pay shipping. I believe it’s $7 for US residents)
  • Ease of ordering from the comfort of your own home
  • Quick delivery
  • Stylish options and frequently updated
  • Extremely light weight
Cons:
  • Fit – They were a bit big for my face and slide off

So would I purchase glasses from Firmoo again? Yes, but only if they were a backup pair. Why -- because I’m a hands on shopper when it comes to glasses. I want to ensure they fit my face. I do believe with a bit more research you could find the perfect fit through their website.

Thank you Firmoo for a new pair of glasses and helping me break out of my color comfort zone.

Let me know if you order a pair, I’d love to see which ones you picked.

Now for the burning question… What do you think?

November Cara Box Exchange

Last month while surfing the blogosphere I stumbled across Wifessionals and while looking around I found the Cara Box Exchange. Each month bloggers are matched up and send one another a sweet handwritten note of encouragement and a few little treasures. I figured why not, it’s a great way to meet other bloggers.  Oh and at the end of the month there's a link party.

November was my first month and the theme was “Childhood.” I was paired with the lovely Lindsay from Domesticated Working Woman.  She grew up in upstate New York so I sent a little of the mountains to her.

The Monday before Thanksgiving my package arrived. Lindsay sent the sweetest note! Even though we are miles and states apart all the treasures were perfect. Vanilla lotion, one of my favorite lip glosses, tasty chai tea, fun wine coasters and a gummy treat.

Thank you Lindsay for bringing a little sunshine to my Monday!

French Toast Casserole

Thanksgiving morning after a long walk with the dogs a marathon of  eating and drinking began! Oh there was football too. Well my mom baked up a tasty French Toast Casserole! The photo does not do this dish justice. Unfortunately, I wasn't around before the first person enjoyed their breakfast. :)

It would be perfect for Christmas morning too.

French Toast Casserole Recipe
Serves  8

Ingredients
1 loaf Texas toast or egg bread, cut into cubes
1 (8-oz.) pkg. cream cheese, slightly softened
Cinnamon
8 large eggs
1 1/2 cup milk
3/4 cup maplesyrup
6 tbsp butter, melted

Directions
Coat a 13 x 9 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
Layer one half of bread cubes in baking dish.
Cut cream cheese into cubes and scatter over bread.
Sprinkle generously with cinnamon.
Mix remaining ingredients and pour over bread and press bread with spatula to help soak up mixture. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes.
Serve with maple syrup.

We had a few glasses of Champagne too. Here's another bottle from Wilson Creek. Check it out, it's Orange Mimosa! Perfect for breakfast if I must say.

Thanksgiving Weekend Rewind

I took the last few days off from blogging to spend quality time with my family in San Diego and LA LA land. It went a little like this....

Wednesday morning Nick, Roxy and I  loaded up and headed out at 5a.m. (yes that's correct). The plan was to beat the storm out of Tahoe. Well it rained on us the first three hours of our 10 hour journey. Here's what I-5 southbound looks like in the wee morning hours. Not a sole in sight!
Yes, Saint Christopher was on our side and we are very thankful.

Roxy is a very good traveler. Here's me and my girl.

We love us some bird dogs! My Mom and Michael have a crazy two year old vizsla named Lily. Below are Roxy and Lily being good dogs for a treat. Random trivia about the dogs -- Roxy and Lily share the same birthday just one year apart.

And there was already not one, but two Christmas trees up at the house!

We kept Thanksgiving casual, I wore a chevron top from Banana Republic, skinny jeans by LC from Kohl's and my go-to classic grey Toms.

And then there was a feast!

And my sister, the chef. She did an amazing job!  I can't remember all the dishes, but the recipes were all from William-Sonoma ! Hands down one of the best Turkey's I've ever had. Tidbit about the turkey -- it was 100% all organic, never frozen and no hormones.

I can't forget about dessert, wine or champagne!
Dessert Menu: Pumpkin Cheesecake, Apple-Cranberry Pie and Classic Pumpkin pie (not pictured).

There was  plenty of  relaxing, shopping and dog walks too!

We even got a little crazy and took a impromptu family holiday photo.

Let the countdown to Christmas begin!

On the road again

So we're off to-- sunny San Diego to spend Turkey Day with family.

Roxy is with us and she's a great little traveler. She's probably made this trip 6 times in her 3 years.

Where are you traveling for the holiday?

Grandma Jo's Tasty Date Cookies

Good morning friends!
Today I have a tasty cookie recipe straight from grandma Jo!
Even if you don't like dates you'll love these cookies.

Enjoy!

Cookie Dough

 Mix together the following ingredients

1 cup butter
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt

Filling mixture

Cook the following until soft (about 15 minutes) then mash

1 lb. dates
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water - maybe 3/4 if dates are really dry

Once cooled add the following ingredients
1 cup walnuts - chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Roll small pieces of dough in hand & flatten with bottom of glass (dip glass in powdered sugar)
Place on cookie sheet
Add teaspoon of date filling
Place a tiny piece of dough on top, press and seal

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes

They burn easy so when they turn light brown remove from oven.

Bonus -- they freeze well!

Pre Thanksgiving Weekend Update

Happy Monday!

Who's ready for the upcoming long weekend? I am and I'm also looking forward to only working two days this week since I'm taking Wednesday off too.

A few resorts opened (just a few lifts) this week so saturday morning Nick and I headed to Heavenly Mountain Resort for a few hours before the next storm rolled in.

Here are some shots from the gondola ride.
After a few hours of sliding on snow we called it quits.

Guess who had their hair cut? This girl! I think I cut off about 2 inches.

It was prefect timing since later that night I rocked out with some girlfriends at the Joan Jett  & the Blackhearts concert. Here's Jes and I at the HQ bar in MontBleu Casino.

"I love rock 'n' roll, put another dime in the juke box baby..."

Sunday the mountain started out on wind hold so I  enjoyed my coffee and watched a little HGTV. Eventually the lifts started turning, but I was already deep into house chores and making these bad boys.... date filled cookies. They are delish. More on the cookies tomorrow.

It was a great weekend and I'm looking forward to spending Thanksgiving with family.

Most of the above photos were posted to instagram. For play by play follow me @tiara_wasner

Until next time...
