Well, we wrapped up the Lurong Living Challenge! Let's just say after Emerson's Birthday party we went a little rogue. Anyway, I'm feeling lean and mean. We're still eating Paleo and I'm allowing myself a glass of wine on the weekend, if I'm feeling it.

The health and fitness industry continues to grow at a rapid speed every year. While there are fitness blogs and public figures I love and agree with, there are those I can't believe are making a killing in the industry. Either way, if it's inspiring you to get fit then I'm all for it. Today was a tough one. Yup, tough. It wasn't easy narrowing down some of my favorite health and fitness bloggers. Maybe I should have made a top 10 list, but these are blogs I read everyday. I also feel I could go for a run, share a glass of wine or cook a delicious meal with every single one of them. Juli is the funny, talented, crossfitting, paleo eating blogger behind PaleOMG. Her dishes will make you want to start cooking at home all the time. Oh, did I mention she's written three cookbooks! Girlfriend has style and like me has workout clothes for days.

The Fit Foodie Mama
Girlfriend, Annemaire, is one fit mama and amazing cook. Not only should you check out her blog because of dishes like Paleo Sweet Potato & Egg Breakfast Sliders, but her intsagram is super inspiring and real. From daily runs to what's for dinner Annemarie is relatable which makes her one of my must read blogs.

Hawaii Dreaming

Mother nature might have covered Tahoe with two feet of light fluffy snow last week, but it was nothing but sunshine this weekend! The warm sunny weather has me dreaming of summer adventures. However, before summer officially arrives we'll be heading to Maui for a week of fun in the sun! Oh, my sister just happens to be getting married too, more on that later.

Of course, a trip to Hawaii means I'll need a new swimsuit, beach hat, maxi, sandals, etc. While I'm on a mission to create the perfect capsule wardrobe I can't help myself from shopping for some new vacation outfits.

Currently Loving

It's FriYAY! Anyone else excited for the weekend?

I've been on a bit of a health kick lately. Big surprise, right? This week I started working on my back and front squats.

In other news, I've been trying to figure out the direction of this blog and it's future. I love blogging, but sometimes I feel it's a bit forced. Maybe it's because I'm trying to do too much right now or because I'm not in love with the name. I'm curious -- what would you love to see more of and would you be heart broken if I changed the name. Thanks in advance.

Baby Strong

There are two reasons I workout. One, I like the way it makes me feel and, two, to set a good example for Emerson. Now that I have a daughter not only do I need to be able to keep up with her, but I want to show her what it means to be fit and healthy. Life isn't about being thin, it's about being strong and fit.

While I workout a TON [as in more than I care to admit] and consider myself in decent shape, I still struggle with the mom bod [The 5 Stages of the Mom Bod - Home Sweet Ruby] Oh, the mom bod. It's amazing what our bodies can do, but your body postpartum is a totally different story. So soft, so squishy.

Today, I'm a solid 130 lbs [fit update coming soon]. While most of the time you can find me at Crossfit or Spin classes, there are days I can't make it to the gym or want to squeeze in an extra core workout. Five Baby Strong Workout Moves to Love:

1. Wall Squat [Lower Body]
Stand with your back against the wall holding your baby close. With your back touching the wall, lower yourself down, ideally forming a 90 degree angle with your legs. I suggest holding for a minute. Try 10 rounds resting 30 seconds between each round.

2. Lunge [Lower Body]
Stand holding your baby close. Step your right foot forward and slowly [4-8 counts] lower yourself down into a comfortable lunge position until  your left thigh is parallel to the floor.  Pause at the bottom and slowly [4-8 counts] rise up and step your foot back to the standing position. Repeat and alternate between legs.

3. Russian Twists [Core]
I work on core EVERYDAY! Sit on the floor with your knees bent, holding your babying front of you. Lean back [keeping your back in natural alignment] to engage your core. Slowly twist baby to the right side. Pause then slowly twist to the left. Try 3 set of 10.

4. Boat Balance [Core]
Sit on the floor with your knees bent, holding your baby in front of you. Lean back [keeping your back in natural alignment]  to engage your core.  Slowly lift your knees up . pause and hold for 20 second. Repeat rest 5-10 seconds between each rep. You can increase the intensity of the exercise by straightening your arms/legs and lifting baby further out.

5. Baby Bridge [Core]
Lie face up on the floor with your knees bent, your feet flat on the floor, and your baby sitting at the pelvis level. Raise your hips so your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees. Pause then lower your body back to the starting position.

Thoughts about Baby Strong Workout Cards

While working out with a baby is great when I'm in a pinch, It's not something I do everyday. Plus, the older Emerson gets the harder it gets. Sometimes she would prefer to sit next to me and play with toys while I work on core.

Overall, the Baby Strong Workout cards are great for postpartum mamas just cleared for exercise or mama getting back into shape. Plus, they're extremely easy to use. The deck includes a warm up, text and photo instructions for each exercise, four workout sections [upper body, lower body, core and total body],  as well as pre-made circuits.

What I Really Eat



Do you ever read a fitness blog, website, magazine, etc and wonder what they really eat? You're not alone. I want to know if said writer is really practicing what they preach. 

Since I often talk about food and fitness I figured why not talk about what I really eat. You know day to day meals. Yes, I have treats every so often, but my food game is on point 90% of the time. 

Personally, I prefer to eat super clean just so I can enjoy a sweet treat and a glass of wine over the weekend.

I look at food as fuel and notice the greatest gains when I'm eating clean, drinking plenty of water and sleeping 7-8 hours a night.

So what does a typical day of meals look like?

Breakfast
+ Coffee w/ Almond Milk & Honey [Every Damn Morning]
+ Two Hard Boiled eggs with a cup of fruit, Green Smoothie, or Frittata

Lunch
+  Leftovers are my go-to
+ Typically it's a salad of some sort

Dinner
+ Salmon/Chicken and veggie/salad or Breakfast for Dinner: 2 Eggs, Avocado and roasted sweet potatoes

Snacks 
+ Fruit
+ Apple with nut butter 
+ Carrots, Celery or sliced cumbers

Yup, nothing too fancy here. Typically, on Sundays, I meal prep what I can. It includes baking chicken, roasted sweet potatoes, hard boiled eggs, and chopping veggies for the week. This makes meals super easy.

You might have noticed the plan is from a challenge I mentioned a few weeks ago. I'm almost done with the Lurong Living  Challenge and plan to write a full review. While I haven't lost a single pound my body composition has changed. It's truly amazing. I'm living proof that diet is just as important, if not more than exercise. You are what you eat.

Currently, I've been doing a lot of window shopping for myself and a lot of buying for Emerson. I guess that's the way the cookie crumbles when you have a little girl! Anyway... I seriously would love to scrap my entire closet and start new.... if I had a million dollars.

Like most of you, I'm a Nordstrom shopper. Naturally I was excited for the winter sale because, well, it means spring is almost here and summer is just around the corner, too! I haven't purchased anything, but I have a few things in my cart. Of course, it's mostly workout apparel. I might have a problem...

Six Ice Cream Sandwiches for your Valentine

The quickest way to my heart is through ice cream. You better believe the husband knows this. Obviously, when it comes to dessert I gravitate to all things ice cream related. Valentine's day is tomorrow and while I don't know what I'm making for dinner, I do know I'm having ice cream for dessert. Maybe we'll have dessert for dinner. HA! Just kidding. Anyway, while at my local Whole Foods Market I made sure to stock up on a few pints. Yes, a few pints is correct. A girl needs options.

This year I'm spicing  up Valentine's day with Ice Cream sandwiches! Homemade cookies + a scoop of my favorite flavor! Here's the line up for tomorrow night: Talenti [Sea Salt Caramel], Ben & Jerry's [half baked], and Three Twins [mocha difference]. Enough said.

How to Be Fit All Year

It's no surprise I'm chatting about fitness, again. You know, working out is my jam. January came and passed just like that and so did most 'New Years Resolutions.' Resolutions should be thrown out the window [IMO]. Why not focus on various goals over the course of the entire year. It takes the pressure off and you're more likely to stay on track. Before you know it, eating healthy and exercising daily is second nature.

How to Be Fit All Year

1. Accountability Buddy
Getting fit with a friend is more fun. This could be someone you workout with or just check in with during the week. My accountability buddies range from my sister in Southern California, to my 6 a.m. girl bike [aka spin] gang, to my Crossfit crew. Here we're working out on a Saturday morning to raise money for Barbells for Boobs!

2. Workout Calendar
I'm not sure about you, but I schedule my workouts for the week. One it keeps me accountable and two I make the time to do it. Not sure where to start? Check out the BeFit workout calendars. I included the 30 Day Fat Burn below, but they also ofter 30 Day Butt Lift, Yoga, etc.



3. Workout
Mix it up. I personally love Crossfit and spin. However, sometimes life throws you a curveball, and you can't always make it to the gym. So what do I do? Depending on the weather I may go for a run, but lately I've been loving the BeFit youtube channel. So many great workouts. Plus, the workouts match the workout calendar! Here's the corresponding 30 Day Fat Burn Workouts.

4. Nutrition
80 percent of being fit, losing weight and feeling great, has to do with what you eat. Your mother wasn't kidding when she said, "You are what you eat." Remember food is fuel. Typically I kick my mornings off with a protein shake!

5. Have Fun
Remember to always have fun. If you're not having fun working out and getting fit you're probably not going to stick with it.

Emerson's First Birthday Party

Emerson turned one on January 29 and well we couldn't go without throwing her a party! My goal was to keep it low key and simple. We celebrated with around 20 friends and family. It was perfect, complete with a healthy cake and homemade decorations!

With the help of my step-mom and mother-in-law we made the 'Happy Birthday' banner. Of course, we had to snap a photo of our family of three!

I kept the desserts simple. Heart almond sugar cookies for guests and a black bean cake for Emerson. Since the party started at two we had finger foods to munch on [i.e., meat, cheese, crackers, veggies & hummus, nuts, etc.]

I used burlap fabric as a table runner and wood rounds to add dimension to the table. Fun fact: we DIY'ed the wooden rounds for our wedding 3.5 years ago! The hubby let me keep three;)

I wasn't really ready to give my sweetheart a cake laced with sugar upon sugar so I searched and searched for a semi-healthy cake. At the last minute, like the night before, I landed on a black bean lava cake. I left out the chocolate chips and spice and voila we had her first cake! I topped it with homemade coconut cream and raspberries! Since there were two extra cakes I cut them in four for guests to try. Most enjoyed the cake.

With leftover paper from the Happy Birthday banner we were able to make a cake topper. I'm so happy with the way it turned out. We used tiny stickers to spell out her name.

There you have it our simple yet modern first birthday. I just love how everything turned out. It just goes to show you don't have to go over the top to have a fun, festive and cute birthday party.

We read to Emerson everyday and sometimes it's the same book over and over. Why? Because, well, she likes some books more than others. As do we.

Girlfriend loves being read to so much she will bring a book to us and then proceed to sit in our lap so we can read to her. Over the last year we've read a few book more than others.

Anytime I'm at Target I always browse the book section. You never know when you'll catch a great sale. I recently purchased The Biggest Kiss for Valentine's Day and Little Blue Truck board book just because!

Emerson Quinn | Twelve Months


It's been a whirlwind of a year, but we survived our first year as parents! Our little girl is equal parts sweet and sassy and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Height + Weight | I really have no idea, but maybe 23-25 lbs and 30 ish inches!

Health | She's a healthy little girl. We're cutting 4 molars ....yes all at the same time. poor girl.

Sleep | With the molars coming in her sleep has been a bit off. While she mostly sleeps through the night 3 [ish] nights a week she might wake up between 3 and 5 a.m. We give her a bottle and she goes right back to sleep.

Eat | Loves EVERYTHING! She mostly feeds herself. We give her whatever we're eating [i.e., salmon, broccoli, chicken, berries, hard boiled eggs, etc.]

Wear | 12 -18 months depending on brand. We're loving GAP's spring line.

Social | We slowed down after the Holiday's, but she loves seeing her friends when she goes to the nanny. We also get out and walk the dog often.

Milestones | 

+ Even more expressive [Ohhhhhh] which is so cute. She's a chatty kathy -- Ma-ma, uh-oh, da-da
+ upgraded to a new carseat
+ started wearing shoes regularly
+ feeding herself 100% of the time.
+ practically running
+ drinking goats/whole milk
+ working on baby sign language
+ started giving up the evil eye which is hilarious
+ went her her friend Wyatt's 1st birthday party

Postpartum | Rocking at life.
