DIY Photo Coasters

I completely forgot about the Winter Pinterest Challenge over at Young House Love today and immediately starting thinking about what projects I've crafted recently, but never blogged about. For Christmas I DIY'd a few gifts; there's just something sweet about a homemade gift.

Anyway, today I thought I would share the photo coasters I made.

Materials

  • White Square Ceramic Tiles (I found these at Lowe’s for 16 cents each!)
  • Photos (I printed 8, but only made 6 coasters)
  • Mod Podge (I used Glossy)
  • Folk Art Clearcote Acrylic High Sealer (I used a gloss spray)
  • 2-3 foam applicators
  • Self-stick rubber or felt pads (I purchased 3M rubber pads)
  • Wax paper

Directions

Print 6-8 photos you would like to use. (Maybe pick a theme). Next, cut the photos to size.

Once all the photos are cut to size apply Mod Podge to the back of the photo with a foam applicator, then press down onto tile.  Allow to dry completely.

Once dry, apply a layer of Mod Podge with a foam applicator to the top of the photo.  Use even left-to-right strokes (lines will show).  Allow to dry completely.(Note:  make sure each coat dries completely before applying the next coat. I also laid them on wax paper so I would not ruin the table).

Repeat with 2 more layers of Mod Podge allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next. I allowed 24 hours between each layer.

Once the coasters are completely dry then it’s time to spray with Acrylic Sealer. I recommend spraying them outside.

The Acrylic Sealer is an important step, it will seal the project.  This will ensure the coaster is waterproof and can handle wet glasses sitting on the coasters.

I applied a total of 4 coats of sealer, allowing each to dry completely before applying the next coat.

Lastly, add some backing to the coasters.  I used 3M self-stick rubber pads (one in each corner).

Now it's time to wrap them up as a gift or place them on your coffee table.
